Cab sim connected to PS2 FX send or in FX loop amp load question

i have been trying to figure out the best way to connect a cab sim (torpedo CAB M+ in my case) to my setup. the key is i want to do this post FX pedals (so the line out from PS2 doesn’t work.)

here is what i do and is this safe for my amp load:

i connect the FX send cable from the PS2 to my pedal board routing the amp via the PS2 to my pedal board.

then rather than plugging the FX return into the PS2, i plug it into to my cab M+ pedal (leaving the loop incomplete wrt the Ps2.)

then i can plug my headphones into the cab pedal and turning down the ps2, not receive any audio to my speakers.

when i want to run the pedals to my speakers i simply unplug the FX return cable from the cab pedal and plug it back into the PS2.

is this safe for the amp? ie PS2 just routes the amp to the pedal board but doesn’t return to the Ps2 to complete the loop. will the amp see the appropriate load (unless i turn the volume all the way down on the ps2 it still seems to play to the connected speaker - just without the pedals.)

related, if i leave the fx return cable plugged into the ps2 ( but unplugged from my pedal board ) it seems to mute the speaker - the ps2 must recognize a cable is plugged in but not receiving any signal. is it better to do this (running some kind of AB switcher when i want to route to my cab sim pedal) or just unplug the unconnected fx return cable from the ps2 and just turn down the volume on the ps2?

thank you for any thoughts.

Hey Oliver,

Yes, it’s safe. And depending on the amp, you probably don’t even need to power the PS on. The FX send will output signal to your pedalboard with the power off. Either way, your amp will remain under load.

See Silent Mode on page 9 Application Example # 4.

Dave

thank you very much!

Piggybacking on this…as I just got a PS and was hoping to do the same…

Are there any good, proper splitter boxes that won’t affect tone that I could add into this setup. So the FX Return cable from the pedal board could be split into two signals… one line going to the Cab M as described… but then another cable going to the FX Return on the power station so I could still have speaker cab audio with FX.

Sometimes I want to record with my cabs on so I can get feedback, etc…

Is there a good box for doing this with the return cable?

i actually run the return from my pedal board into the “amp in” on the cab M and then run the “speaker out” from that back into the fx return on the ps2. works fine.
