Connection - Soldano Astro 20

HI Everyone, I am considering the purchase of a Power Station to; 1) Boost my Astro 20, 2) Take advantage of the Power Amps saturation while either Bedroom / Silent Recording. Given that the Astro 20 also has a internal load box / IR loader with a line out, I am wondering what would be the best way of connecting it. I also have a Synergy Syn-2 connected within the Astro’s effects loop. Any help would be appreciated. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hey Bacon and welcome to the community :tada:

Don’t know if it’s the combo or head…

This jack plug is your combo’s speaker cable, it connects from your amps output to the speaker. So you need to do the following:

  1. Unplug all power from the amp and Power Station.
  2. Unplug your speaker cable – remember this jack socket, we need it for later…
  3. Use a 1/4" jack female to female coupler
  4. Connect the female coupler to the jack you just unplugged.
  5. Connect a speaker cable from the coupler to the Power Station SPKR OUT
  6. Connect a second speaker cable from the Power Station AMP IN to the jack socket from step 1.
  7. Match the impedance settings between your amp and the power station.
  8. Done

For your other question take a look here,

Hope that helps!

Dan

Dan,

Many thx for your response and apologies that I forgot to mention that I own the head.

It appears that the Astro 20 does not have a typical “load box” built-in, but an IR Loader with a XLR Line Out which is positioned post Preamp and bypasses the Power Amp section of the Soldano. Given such, I plan to;

  1. utilize the the line-out of the Soldano Preamp (without the IR Loader functionality) and connect it to the Line-In of the PS,
  2. configure the PS per your “Self Attenuation” video,
  3. connect the PS Line-out to my RME UFX III Interface.
  4. load the IR’s per DAW plug-in.

That should cover the bases for silent recording and still provide benefit from the PS Power Section. My Syn-2 will remain with the FX Loop of the Soldano.

The only question which remains open is how to then integrate a physical speaker (at a later date) into the above?

Hi Tom,

Great, I think you got to the bottom of that—it should work well.

As for adding a speaker…

The PS-2A has two speaker outputs: one is being used for self-attenuation mode, so connect the second to a second speaker.

Or consider the Power Load IR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjb8nYF8tM4&list=PLzdbyoIlqZ5D2SiOKefKT9a8ENcvxpMbN

This has IR built in and also an unaffected out (pre-IR) that you can send to a DAW for processing and IRs.

Dan,

One last thought… I guess just connecting the Soldano Head Speaker Out to the Amp In of the PS would allow me to connect a speaker cabinet directly to the PS and still route through the PS line out to my Interface, correct?

Tom

Yes it would! This would be the “normal” way of using it.
