Boost/dirt pedal recommendations for Pittbull 45

Hi!
I have a Pittbull 45 head and am looking for a dirt/boost/pedal recommendation. I used to have an ultra lead, so I guess I’m looking for a pedal that can get me the extra gain similar to the UL.

Rock on!

PS. If anybody knows how many Pittbull 45 heads were made, I’d like to know that, too.

There will probably be some others here who will chime in with pedal recommendations, but here’s my take:

If you use a boost or OD in front, you’re going to end up putting the Drive channel volume very low. On that amp, there is a little bleed past the volume at very low settings, so it could sound artifically buzzy. Also, the UL has a lot of low end torque, which the 45 won’t do.

So, my recommendation would be to attenuate the amp with a PS-2A. That will do three important things to get you on your way:

  1. You can turn the Drive channel volume up higher to wake up the power amp stage.
  2. The PS will allow you to dial in more low end whomp that the amp won’t necessarily do by itself using the voicing switches and Presence/Depth controls.
  3. Any time based effects you apply can be done through the PS FX Loop which will put those effects after the pushed power amp stage of the 45.

Yes, it’s a bit of extra expense, but for what you’re after, you may find it a far better solution than a pedal up front. Not to mention it will sound like a beast even at very low volumes.

I use a VFE Standout and Zuul+ with my Sig X and Deliverance 120 sometimes.

The Standout HPF and LPF allows you to use it with any rig. Its basically a modified Tube Screamer.

I find Fryette amps handel petals fine. Just a matter of what color you want. Most of the time no pedals is my preference.

Yeah, I usually do not like to use pedals, but I just need an extra gain stage for legato solos when needed - the UL has four gain stages, and the 45 has three. I will only use it on solos that require it.
