PS-100 failure after 45 mins. no sound

I need support help with a brand new PS-100. Used line in from a blackbird preamp to an 16 ohm cabinet last night at a gig. 45 minutes into the set it stopped working. No sound. Tubes still “working” ie red. Did not notice any symptoms of blowing a circuit but unit was very hot. Well ventilated. Fuse is not blown.
This morning I tried a Marshall head and no sound unless I put the unit in bypass mode.
Purchased through electric mojo in Canada.
What are my next steps?

Hi Steve,

I am wondering if this is just the tubes or if the unit needs a warranty repair.

We can send out tubes free of charge; we cover shipping to US locations. They will probably cover the cost to Canada too. What would you like to do? Try swapping in new tubes or start the repair process. If you want to go the repair route, start a conversation with Electric Mojo and the unit will eventually get back to us. Or if you want to try tubes first, then use these instructions: How can I make a replacement part request?

Sorry you had this experience.

Regards,

Dan

Thank you for the reply and offer Dan. I would like to try the tube replacement. However I am wondering what would have caused this overheating? Is this likely to happen again? Thanks for your thoughts/experience.

Hi Steve,

Because you mentioned over hearing and no fuse blowing I am now leaning towards the warranty repair option as the best course of action. But it is so hard to know without looking at the unit for more clues. Why don’t you talk with the dealer and ask if they have a unit in stock to enable you to do a swap?

Hi Dan. I did not open the unit as to not negate the warranty. I should have been more specific and said the mains fuse was not blown. Should I take a look at the board for internal fuses? Then we can make a call on your two options. The store is not close and we need to do shipping.

Thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,

I understand, let’s try and avoid unnecessary shipping. Yes, open it up and check the internal fuses. This should be helpful What fuses do I need for the Power Station PS-2 and PS-100?

Opening it will not void the warranty, don’t worry we are not animals.

When you open it, please look careful at all components you can see, look for anything that might have gotten too hot and burnt. This will be a major clue. Take a look at the parts underneath the fans too and follow those wires to where they go to the boards. If you see anything suspicious please share a photo.

If the fuses have blow I suspect the tubes. If the fuses are fine then you should ship it for a warranty repair because the issue is somewhere else and that will need a service to fix.

Ok. The fuse in F401 is blown. I cannot see any black burns anywhere nor any Smokey smell at all. Should I just try replacing the fuse and see if it blows again?

Steve

Hi Steve,

You could, it might blow again indicating an issue with the tubes ( most likely). But we can send you out a new set. I think F401 is one of the power supply fuses indicating something is drawing too much current. Very likely to blow again!

Dan

Ok will try that. I am in NYC for a few days so will loop back with you Friday or Saturday next week. Thanks for your help so far Dan.
